No, Michael Keaton Isnt Returning For Spider-Man: Far From Home

With Spider-Man: Far From Home being the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie post Avengers: Endgame, a lot of secrets were being kept about the film to keep the big crossover event properly secret. Now that things are getting a bit relaxed on the spoiler front, we're getting some more detail about what is actually in the upcoming movie, as well as what's not in it, including an appearance by the Vulture.

For many, one of the highlights of Spider-Man: Homecoming was Michael Keaton's role as Adrian Toomes. He's generally viewed as one of the better MCU villains to date, and that film ended with Toomes knowing the secret of Spider-Man's identity. It seemed like the sort of thing that might factor into a sequel, and so the word that Michael Keaton would be back for the movie that came to be known as Spider-Man: Far From Home wasn't a huge surprise.

Except, it turns out, that's not the case. Director Jon Watts says that we won't see Michael Keaton in the new movie, nor will we see Laura Harrier, who played Liz, Peter's love interest, and Toomes daughter, in the first film. According to Watts...

Keaton is not in the movie. And Laura is not in the movie.

Jon Watts doesn't go into further detail with Fandango, so it's not clear why it was being reported that Michael Keaton would be returning a year ago and now that turns out not to be true. It's possible there were initial plans to have Adrian Toomes appear, but the script went through changes. It's also possible that somebody got a hold of a fake script, something MCU movies have been known to use in the past to prevent spoilers from leaking.

Back when it was reported that Keaton would be in the movie we knew very little about the project as a whole, and so the possibility that he would be returning was certainly there. Now that we know what the movie is about, with Peter Parker on a European vacation with classmates when some massive elemental monsters appear, it's hard to imagine how Keaton's character, in prison in New York as far as we know, would fit into the story.

There appears to be plenty going on already. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Mysterio, a character who is typically a Spider-Man villain, but appears to be a hero in the trailers. Of course, Mysterio is usually a fraud in the comics, so it remains to be seen if this is all on the level.

In addition to that, we have the information that a hole has been torn in between dimensions as part of the use of the Infinity Stones, allowing at least one person from an alternate reality to cross over.

While we may not see Michael Keaton return in Spider-Man: Far From Home the possibility of him returning in the future is always there. If the multiverse really is going to play a role in the future of the MCU, we could see multiple versions of Michael Keaton for all we know.

Apparently, Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Maz Kanata Did Have A Fling

Maz Kanata had only the briefest cameo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but the scene was an important one, which also gave us a bit of possible insight into the personal life of the character. When Maz sends Finn and Rose off to Canto Bight in search of the "Master Codebreaker" one gets the impression that her relationship with the man was more than professional. Now, the other half of that equation, Justin Theroux, who played the codebreaker, has confirmed that, yes, he and Maz Kanata apparently had some sort of relationship. According to Theroux...

I can definitely confirm it. That happened --- she's a bobcat!

It's not entirely clear just how "canon" this relationship is, as opposed to Justin Theroux just having some fun with Yahoo, but until somebody with greater authority comes out to contradict this statement, I'm just going to assume that it's accurate.

The Master Codebreaker is an odd character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as he's only ever seen on screen for a brief moment as Finn, Rose, and BB-8 get carted off to jail. He's the goal, and not only does he not actually impact the plot in any meaningful way, he's never aware that anything was ever going on that could have changed that. Still, fans of Justin Theroux got to recognize him in his brief cameo, and he got to appear in a Star Wars movie, which seems to be every actor's goal these days.

Of course, now that we know that something did happen between these two, there must be more. Where's the tie-in comic book about the ill-fated romance between Maz and "MC" (because giving him an actual name would be no fun)? There's got to be a story worth telling there. Whatever happened certainly had an impact on Maz Kanata, she can't even talk about him without getting all dreamy, even in the middle of a firefight. Does he feel the same way? If he does, then why did the two ever split? Clearly, there's a story to be told here. There must be answers. I must know.

Of course, this also has to make you wonder. The Master Codebreaker isn't the only person that Maz Kanata has shown affection for in these movies. She's previously referred to Chewbacca has her "boyfriend." If Maz so fondly remembers all her exes, then perhaps there was something going on between her and Wookie as well. We've known that all the new Star Wars material could mean entering into new genres, so why not a Star Wars romantic drama. Somebody talk to Disney's streaming service, I think The Maz Kanata Diaries could work really well as a series.




As much as I liked Maz in TFA, her cameo in The Last Jedi just didn't work for me. I'd argue that it might have been worthwhile to keep her in the audiences' minds for an appearance in the next movie, but I highly doubt the continuity in this trilogy is being planned that carefully. But all context aside, this is a fantastic little sculpt!

Jurassic World 2 Made Almost As Much Money In China Opening Day As The Last Jedi In Its Entire Run

China has become an increasingly important country when it comes to judging a blockbuster's commercial success. In some cases, Chinese audiences will throw even more money at a movie that's already raked in a lot of cash in other territories, and in other cases a movie that wasn't commercially successful domestically can still collect a lot of money in China. And then there instances where a movie that's popular nearly everywhere around the world isn't met with the same reception in China. Such was the case last winter with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and in case you needed more proof that audiences there weren't particularly keen on seeing Episode VIII, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom just opened in China and made somewhere between $34-$36 million, which is almost as much money as what The Last Jedi made during its entire run in the same country. Evidently over there, dinosaurs are a bigger deal than lightsabers.

Universal Pictures places Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom at opening at $34.4 million in China, while box office tracker EntGroup, according to THR, places the sequel at $36 million. Either way, not only is this a solid start for the latest entry in the Jurassic Park franchise, it's also comes remarkably close to Star Wars: The Last Jedi's total haul in China, which added up to only $42 million. Opening in China at the beginning of January, The Last Jedi opened to a measly $7 million. Days later, 92% of The Last Jedi screenings in China were pulled, and the movie was already only taking up approximately 34.5% of the country's screenings. Needless to say Chinese audiences overall weren't welcoming towards The Last Jedi, but judging by these numbers, it doesn't look like Fallen Kingdom will meet the same fate. It's also worth mentioning that 2015's Jurassic World performed quite well in China, becoming the third highest-grossing Hollywood film in the country that year with $229 million.

As things stand now, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is on track to become one of the biggest blockbuster openings in China. It won't come anywhere close to the $191 million that Avengers: Infinity War raked in, but it is expected to overtake Black Panther's $65 million and Ready Player One's $61.6 million. Universal decided to release Fallen Kingdom earlier internationally in order to avoid competing with the World Cup, and as of yesterday, the sequel has made over $202 million worldwide. As for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, while it didn't perform well in China, the space opera ultimately brought in over $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2017.
