Van Helsings Showrunner Played A Crazy Death Prank On His Cast

Van Helsings Showrunner Played A Crazy Death Prank On His Cast

Thanks to Peak TV there's been an abundance of onscreen deaths on programming ranging from zombie shows to tearjerker dramas. We see people die a lot on television these days, which means there are also a lot of conversations that have to happen behind the scenes between the showrunner and the actors who are about to lose their onscreen jobs. In the case of Van Helsing, creator Neil LaBute and cast member Aleks Paunovic have been in an epic prank war during the filming of the first three seasons of the Syfy series, but things bumped up a notch this season when LaBute decided to fake a script to the whole cast that indicated his character Julius was going to be killed off. At Comic-Con 2018, LaBute indicated he had the opportunity to pull off the perfect prank and he took it.

So, toward the end of the year, our last script was going to come out, and I realized that this was my perfect opportunity, so I told all the writers and just a couple of other people that I'm going to kill [Aleks' character] in the draft that we send out to everybody. And to not let anybody know. And so it landed on the weekend and I get this call in the evening; [he's] just slightly kind of panicky, but trying to sound like, 'This has been so much fun. I've had such a great time.'

If you've kept tabs on Van Helsing, you may already know that Aleks Paunovic and Neil LaBute get into these sort of prank wars all the time. They were actually started by Paunovic, who also admitted he once saw LaBute's directors chair, and made a video where he walked up and kicked it as a little bitty prank that ended up spawning a war. In the case of the epic death prank, Paunovic says that he was at home sick when he first read that he was being killed off on the series. (Again, he wasn't.)

Let me digress. I was sick and had a fever. I was hanging out at my buddy's house in L.A. I'm going to go out and get some groceries. I said, 'OK.' Let me just read this episode before we get back and go to the movies. I was like reading the episode [going], 'Oh my God, this is great, this is great. WHAT. The. Fuck. And so I started pacing around. I'm sweating even more now from the fever.

It would be one thing to play a little joke on the one actor, but Neil LaBute went all out for this epic prank. Not only did he send this fake script to the entire cast involved with the season finale, he also went a step further and talked to Aleks Paunovic, blaming the writers for sending the script before he had talked to him. He went on for 20 minutes before revealing the joke. If that were the end of the story, it would be an epic prank. As it stands, it's certainly one of the best pranks I've ever heard -- a prank the other members of the Van Helsing panel called "George Clooney-esque." But it didn't end there, because of course, the entire cast had been fooled, as well. Paunovic said while at the Van Helsing Comic-Con panel:

He's like stone cold, too. 'You know, you never know. You might come back. You know, we sometimes bring somebody in a flashback.' He's like, 'Yeah, totally.' The rest of the week, people are coming up to him because they all read he died. Because he didn't do a revision. He just let it hang for three, four days. So everyone's going, 'I'm so sorry.' I'm like, 'No, it was a joke.' They're going, 'Yeah. Right...' So that was the worst I've ever been gotten on a practical joke.

Van Helsing isn't exactly the type of series where all of the characters are safe at any given moment. There are plenty of deaths on the series, and even with the joke-y nature of the relationship between the show's creator and his favorite actor to prank, it's not hard to see why Aleks Paunovic was sweating bullets when he first saw the script. (Whether or not he was actually feverish.) Still, Julius will be back in Season 3, and we can't wait to see what other off-screen tricks are in store.

Van Helsing is going to premiere this fall in September or October--whenever the network decides to announce the official premiere, according to the cast. We'll keep you updated on any more news that drops about Season 3, but for now, I get the feeling Aleks Paunovic would appreciate any advice on how to top Neil Labute's truly epic prank.

The Lego Movie 2 Box Office: The Animated Sequel Did Not Have An Awesome Weekend

The Lego Movie 2 Box Office: The Animated Sequel Did Not Have An Awesome Weekend

Although it seemed like an over-the-top reach as an anchor for a cinematic universe, the LEGO brand pulled off a near-miracle in 2014 with The LEGO Movie, which grossed over $469 million worldwide. Had the sequel released in quick order, as opposed to slotting behind two spinoffs, today's stats might be far more awesome for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. The animated sequel wasn't a total box office brick, but it's obvious that this franchise is having some growing pains. Take a look at the weekend estimates.

In the weeks prior to this weekend's big releases, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part inspired some decent, if not lofty, box office expectations. It was thought that the deconstructive comedy might make upwards of around $55 million when taking the top slot in the weekly results, but the actual $34.4 million earned is obviously far less than what industry insiders expected.

In fact, it's almost exactly half of the $69 million opening weekend experienced by The LEGO Movie's own first weekend intake. Dwindling returns are nothing new in Hollywood, but in the modern blockbuster era, high-profil sequels tend to do as well or better than franchise flagships.

LEGO Batman, buoyed by superhero fandoms, debuted to $53 million, while the lesser-celebrated LEGO Ninjago Movie only brought in $21.2 million in its first weekend for a third-place start. At least Mike Mitchell's direct sequel brought in more than that, though possibly not enough to warrant a quick green light for a third LEGO Movie. It will also be interesting to see if any updates arise in regards to the in-development spinoff The LEGO Brick Race.

It's not exactly clear why The LEGO Movie 2 is dropping so hard at the box office for its debut. That kind of thing tends to happen when critics and audiences are at odds with a new release, but the animated comedy has already won over most of the people that have watched it. It's got an A+ Cinemascore rating with audiences, and over on Rotten Tomatoes, it's 84% fresh with critics and 83% fresh with audiences.

The second-place finisher in this week's box office, Adam Shankman's What Men Want, found itself on the end of some much harsher criticisms. The spiritual remake of Mel Gibson's 2000 comedy What Women Want may not have won over everyone who watched it, but it can't be denied that a lot of people tried it out in theaters. What Men Want earned right at $19 million on a $20 million budget, so it could likely turn profitable before too much longer.

In third place this week is Liam Neeson's latest revenge flick, titled Cold Pursuit. The star-studded and darkly comedic action remake (of the Norwegian movie In Order of Disappearance) beat its own lowered expectations to gross over $10 million for the opening. Still, that's the lowest premiere weekend for a Liam Neeson film since 2010's The Next Three Days, and one of the worst of his career. Perhaps it might have made more if not for racially tinged comments made in the recent past.

The only other new release to crack into the Top 10 - or even the Top 30, is Nicholas McCarthy's evil kid thriller The Prodigy. With Taylor Schilling as the put-upon mother who is potentially unleashing this threat upon the world, The Prodigy managed to immediately top its budget, earning $6.004 million for a flick that cost right at $6 million. Not exactly franchise-inspiring numbers, but probably good enough for Orion.

Next weekend, we'll be watching out for the biggest releases of the week, which will be the life-rewinding horror sequel Happy Death Day 2U and Rebel Wilson's meta rom-com Isn't It Romantic? Both of those will make early Valentine's Day premieres on Wednesday, while Friday will see the release of Frank Grillo's new drama Donnybrook and more. Expect them all to get squashed by How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World on February 22, though.

Rogue Ones Original Plans For Darth Vader Sound Epic

Rogue Ones Original Plans For Darth Vader Sound Epic

We know that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story went through some fairly significant reshoots which drastically changed how some aspects of the film finally made it on screen. This includes the big final scene with Darth Vader. Now, writer Gary Whitta has revealed how he originally conceived Darth Vader's finale when he was creating Rogue One. According to Whitta...

The version I pitched (but never wrote) had Vader on the Scarif beach single-handedly slaughtering his way through a Rebel blockade at the base of the Imperial tower. The version in the Raddus hallway works much better because it's so contained, feels more horror than action.

In the version of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that we saw, Darth Vader ignites his lightsaber at the end of a darkened hallway on board the Rebel ship. In the enclosed space the Rebels have no choice but to try and fight, but they end up as sitting ducks as the Dark Lord of the Sith tears through them. It seems that Whitta's original concept for the scene, though it never actually made it to the page, was for a similar sort of sequence, but one that took place on the planet's surface, rather than a ship in orbit.

This part of the film has come to be a favorite scene among many of the fans of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It shows Darth Vader more as a force of nature than a person, making it clear why the character is so feared throughout the galaxy. As Gary Whitta says, the scene has a sort of horror movie feel to it because of the contained space. Darth Vader comes across like Michael Myers, an unstoppable machine whose only interest is to kill.

Having said that, seeing Darth Vader work in a more open space would have also been quite interesting. With the more open area, Darth Vader could have potentially shown off more of his power. What sort of methods could he have used to break through a Rebel blockade with an entire beachhead at his disposal? One imagines Rebels being flung off into the sky or large pieces of machinery crashing down around them as Vader lays waste to the entire area.

While it's a known fact that Rogue One received fairly significant reshoots, not a lot of detail is actually known about the original version of the movie. Overall, it does seem that the reshoots were the right decision, as the film is pretty well loved by Star Wars fans, something which is reaffirmed by many of the responses to Gary Whitta's tweet here. What's next for the Star Wars Story spinoff movies is not clear. No additional spinoffs have been officially announced, and some rumors have indicated Lucasfilm is taking a step back following the lukewarm response to Solo. However, other reports have claimed that a film about Obi-Wan Kenobi is currently in pre-production with plans to start shooting early next year.

The Case For An Idris Elba James Bond Movie

The Case For An Idris Elba James Bond Movie

For the better part of a decade, Idris Elba's name has been associated with the role of James Bond. A mlange of clockwork-like rumors, speculation and fan casting has had the popular British actor taking on the role of 007 after Daniel Craig. Just this month another rumor popped up about the possibility and was then refuted. Nevertheless, the fan desire to see Idris Elba as 007 is as strong as ever, so despite whatever hangups the studio or the producers might have about casting the actor, it needs to happen. Fortunately, there is actually a solution that gives fans the Bond they want to see, while also giving the franchise flexibility moving forward and that is to make the Idris Elba James Bond movie a one-off.

Now I should first acknowledge that there is currently an actor playing James Bond in Daniel Craig. The current Bond is teaming up with director Danny Boyle for Bond 25 next year, but after that, his future is uncertain and given his past comments, I don't think it's a stretch to say that even if that film isn't his last outing as the super spy, he has more Bond films behind him than ahead of him. So we need a new Bond sooner rather than later.

The next issue to address is why Idris Elba wouldn't be cast as James Bond. If we ignore any arguments that Bond can't be black, the reasoning seemingly comes down to one issue: age. Modern franchises want actors to lead them for a decade, so they tend to steer younger for their stars. That's the same logic that is seemingly giving us an Uncharted film with a Nathan Drake who will be multiple films and years away from the character we love in the games instead of just casting Nathan Fillion. Idris Elba is about to turn 46 and probably wouldn't even start filming the role until at least 48. If Idris Elba's James Bond movie is just a one-off, however, this isn't an issue.

Daniel Craig was cast at 37 and is 50 now, whereas Pierce Brosnan inhabited the role from ages 42-49. If Idris Elba were to play James Bond once at age 49-50, he wouldn't be much older, if at all, than other actors who have had the role, and he wouldn't be approaching his 60's when his time as 007 was up. Also, not everyone ages the same. I mean we're talking about a guy who won his pro kickboxing debut at age 44 here.

Admittedly, a solo James Bond film might seem strange in this day and age of long-running franchises and multi-picture deals. However there is precedent even within this franchise for an actor to play Bond for one film and one film only. George Lazenby played the MI6 agent in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and that was it. This isn't Wolverine. Audiences expect, and are used to, the actor who portrays James Bond to change over time and we don't need some origin story each time out, we know who the character is.

The reasons that Idris Elba should be Bond are numerous and obvious; he's effortlessly cool, unquestionably good-looking and most importantly, he's British. From Stringer Bell to DCI John Luther, Idris Elba has given us glimpses at what he could bring to one of the most iconic roles in cinema, but we need the full picture. There are a lot of positives to a single Idris Elba James Bond film as well. There have been multiple names other than Elba's bandied about as a possible replacement for Daniel Craig, everyone from Tom Hardy to Tom Hiddleston, but no clear front runner.

By positioning a solo Bond film between the Daniel Craig films and whatever comes after, it can act as a bridge that also serves to take pressure off the franchise as it sorts out its long-term plans. There is no obvious next James Bond or actor that fans are clamoring for other than Idris Elba, so better to let him do it for one movie to give time for one to emerge. And if it's announced upfront that this Idris Elba James Bond is a one-time thing, there won't be a fuss when his younger successor is named.

A solo James Bond film with Idris Elba as 007 that is completely separate from anything else also allows for a great deal of flexibility, storytelling-wise. The one-off could tell a singular story that really takes chances, does new things, subverts expectations and delivers something unique -- all while still being a Bond film. It wouldn't have to worry about how it impacts the next film because there is no next film in the same continuity, so it can just go all out.

Now let's say this were to happen. Let's say Idris Elba gets the role for just one film and he's awesome as Bond (he will be) and it's everything we thought it could be and people love it and are excited about the character again. Doesn't that create a problem if it's only a one-time thing? Maybe, but isn't that a good problem to have? If such a film delivers, the door could be left open for more Elba Bond films.

A one-off Idris Elba James Bond film scratches that itch and satisfies fan desires while also giving the franchise time to carefully plan out its future. The thing is, no matter how great the next actor to play James Bond is, if it isn't Idris Elba, there will always be fans who wonder about the road not taken. "What if?" is a powerful question and a one-off Idris Elba James Bond film is the best way to answer it.

Speaking to Forbes, Blum addressed the sequel question, clearing up a bit of confusion about previous remarks of his that made it seem he was against doing any Halloween sequels: No, I think that got a bit screwed up.
