Why Shazam! Is The DCEU's Best Hope

It has been almost a year since Justice League hit theaters, and the DCEU has gone through a fair number of significant changes and upheavals. There are several significant projects right around the corner with films like Aquaman and Wonder Woman 1984 set for release, but it's a lesser-known hero who stands out as the possible brightest hope for live-action DC movies. I'm specifically talking about David F. Sandberg's Shazam!, as the upcoming, lighthearted DC romp looks like it could be the saving grace of live-action DC movies.

The first official trailer for Shazam! dropped this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, taking the internet by storm. For the first time, the internet finally got a chance to see Asher Angel as Billy Batson, as well as Zachary Levi as the titular hero -- who Billy turns into when he yells the name "Shazam!" There has never been a DC movie quite like this (even if Shazam! draws a ton of inspiration from movies like Big), and that could play a key role in ensuring its success.

Though we don't love to continually draw comparisons between the DCEU and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's worth looking at the success of Iron Man to see how Shazam! could mark a major win for DC. Tony Stark was a relatively unknown property to mainstream audiences when the MCU began back in 2008. In the same regard, Shazam is a similarly obscure DC hero (though he's nothing like Tony in terms of characterization), and that could help position Shazam! as something fresh and exciting.

Just take a look back at the problems that other DCEU films have faced over the years. Movies like Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League were largely criticized by some segments of the fanbase for how they handled certain beloved characters. Many DC aficionados have much-needed ideas as to what their movie Batman, Superman, or Joker should look and act like in a film. On the other hand, a hero like Shazam (who hasn't been depicted in live-action for decades) is a blank slate with far more malleability and potential for new types of stories.

Granted, the Wonder Woman franchise is doing just fine with an established hero who has plenty of mainstream brand recognition, but Diana Prince's formula for success arguably feels somewhat hard for other franchises to replicate. That film was a significant cultural milestone in its own right, and it also largely thrived based on how separated it was from the rest of the DCEU continuity. Shazam! doesn't have to worry about that. Early glimpses have confirmed that it's going all in on references to the greater DCEU lore, but with so little established big-screen mythology, David F. Sandberg and the team behind the movie can do a lot of different and exciting stuff with the titular hero.

From there, if Shazam! does indeed become the success that I think it can become, that could open the door for DC to continue embracing lesser-known heroes to fill out its ranks. With heroes like Martian Manhunter or Booster Gold waiting in the wings, a profitable Shazam! could easily pave the way for DC to similarly invest in these cool icons while giving top-tier heroes like Batman and Superman a much-needed break.

We will find out precisely what audiences think of Billy Batson and his musclebound hero form next year when Shazam! finally debuts on the big screen on April 5, 2019! Where does one start, when telling the legacy of Queen? Is it in the studio, where they tirelessly worked on potential classics such as "We Will Rock You" or "Radio Ga Ga" over the years? Or is it on the stage, where lead singer Freddie Mercury truly shined? When we asked the Bohemian Rhapsody cast to name the one scene in their movie that best captures the spirit of Queen, leading man Rami Malek told us:

I think you'd have to look at, if you could call it a 'scene,' Live Aid. Because it is the culmination of what the trials and tribulations were that got them there in the first place, and they still have something monumental to overcome. So I think if you look at this film, a lot of it is about overcoming adversity and challenging every aspect of yourself and your friends -- learning who you are, in terms of family and friendship, and getting there... with a little help from your friends.

We didn't realize it until Rami Malek pointed this out (I guess that's why they chose him to play Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic), but Queen really wasn't a slam-dunk choice to play the massive Live Aid concert in 1985. A dual concert held in both London and Philadelphia, the live-music extravaganza boasted the star power of Paul McCartney, The Who, David Bowie, U2, Madonna and Led Zeppelin, to name just a few.

The new movie, Bohemian Rhapsody, posits that Queen had to fight for inclusion on the concert bill, and that the members -- estranged at the time -- debated whether they even wanted to get together to play. The band took Live Aid as a test, to prove to the world (and to themselves) that their music and showmanship still had an impact.

As Rami Malek told CinemaBlend during a London press event on behalf of Bohemian Rhapsody, the Live Aid concert perfectly exemplifies the struggle that Queen endured over the course of their entire career -- doubted by many at every step of the way, yet still able to triumph on the biggest stages.

In fact, the scene that captures the creation of the band's biggest single, the one that gives the movie its title, shows that a record executive at their label didn't even want "Bohemian Rhapsody" to be released, saying that no one on the radio would ever play a six-minute odyssey with operatic flourishes. But Queen believed. And look where it got them.

Babadook Director Defends Sexual Assault Scenes In Controversial New Movie

Sexual assault is a theme that is difficult to confront in a manner that audiences at large will find acceptable. Even if based on historical events and precedent, theres a line that exists between what counts as enough and what counts as too much, as The Nightingale writer/director Jennifer Kent has just found out first hand.

After the latest film from the writer/director of The Babadook received some negative press for inciting several audience members to walk out of The Nightingale, Kent spoke towards these events in a statement that included the below remarks:

I do not believe this would be happening if the film was at all gratuitous or exploitative. Whilst The Nightingale contains historically accurate depictions of colonial violence and racism towards our Indigenous people, the film is not about violence Weve made this film in collaboration with Tasmanian Aboriginal elders, and they feel its an honest and necessary depiction of their history and a story that needs to be told. I remain enormously proud of the film.

From the early reports that have come out of The Nightingales early screenings, there are apparently repeated instances where a character is being sexually assaulted on screen. But the rage towards Jennifer Kents depiction of that horrific act isnt based around the act itself, but instead it seems to be pertaining to the frequency of the act included in the film.

This criticism was most bluntly expressed by an audience member who, during the films premiere in Sydney this past Sunday, exclaimed upon her exit, "Im not watching this. Shes already been raped twice. And yet, Jennifer Kent is resolute in the film shes presented the audience, as she told The Independent in her remarks, enforcing that the atrocities shes put onto film were historically accurate.

The Nightingales overall story isnt centered around this particular event though, as Aisling Franciosis protagonist Clare is pursuing a Lieutenant Hawkins, a British officer played by The Hunger Games Sam Claflin, through Australia in 1825. Her quest to find this man is rooted in the fact Hawkins has murdered her husband and infant child, and basically gotten away with these acts.

With a story that grim and brutal, much as The Babadook before it, its almost a surprise that The Nightingale would catch such fire for depicting the subject of sexual assault. But with various films in the past using that very theme as threadbare justification for character motivations, the discomfort a repeated execution of such an act on the screen would incite is a pretty big discussion point.

It can be assumed that distributor IFC films will stand by Jennifer Kents statement, and will release The Nightingale without any alteration. But if enough audience members complain, there might be a push for both parties to discuss a re-edited version of the film. And while most audience petitions these days are for frivolous matters, this might be one that catches fire, in hopes of boosting the films distribution prospects.

For now, it should be advised that if any potential audience member for The Nightingale has an aversion to sexual assault depicted in film, this just isnt going to be a film for them.

The Nightingale is slated for debut in limited release on August 2nd, with a nationwide expansion to follow at an undetermined date.
