Jamie Foxx Is Definitely Playing Spawn In The Upcoming Reboot

While Spawn remains a popular character over at Image Comics, his 1997 theatrical debut did not go well, with the Michael Jai White-led feature earning dismal reviews and only making close to $88 million worldwide. Two decades later, Spawn is getting a chance at cinematic redemption, and the character's creator, Todd McFarlane, will direct the reboot that's being put together by Blumhouse Productions. A few weeks back, it was rumored that Jamie Foxx was being lined up to play the demonic protagonist, known in civilian form as Al Simmons, and sure enough Foxx has officially signed on for the role.

Back in 2013, Jamie Foxx expressed interest in playing Al Simmons, and five years later, his wish has been granted, thus making him the first actor to be added to the new Spawn movie. In the comics, Al served on a CIA black ops team, but he was killed by his partner Chapel on the orders of Jason Wynn, arguably the most powerful man in the U.S. government, after Al questioned too many of his missions. Then Al's soul was sent to Hell because unbeknownst to him, he'd killed innocent people during his time in the CIA, but he made a deal to return to the world of the living in exchange for his soul. Unfortunately for Al, he returned five years later and had been turned into a demonic being who initially had trouble remembering his past life. As for why Foxx was selected to play Spawn, here's what Todd McFarlane told Deadline:

There are five or six moments where I'm going to need things from my actors, and a couple of them have to come from Jamie, and I've seen him deliver them onscreen. He gets into a zone, with body language and a look that basically will say way more than anything i could type on a piece of paper, and this movie is going to need those moments. And in the odd moment where he has to deliver a line that's short, curt and has impact, he can do it in a way that makes you go, 'Whoa, I don't want to mess with that guy. What a badass.'

Unlike the 1997 Spawn movie, this reboot will not tell Al's origin story, so aside from possibly seeing some quick flashbacks, don't expect any of the events mentioned earlier to be depicted. In fact, as previously revealed by Todd McFarlane, this version of Spawn won't speak in a traditional sense, though he will still "have a voice." This should pose an interesting challenge for Jamie Foxx, as he won't deliver his dialogue in the same way that Michael Jai White did. This won't be Foxx's first time acting in a comic book movie, as he previously played Max Dillon, a.k.a. Electro, in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The actor was most recently seen as Bats in Baby Driver, and he'll appear later this year as Little John in Robin Hood, as well as continue his hosting duties on Fox's Beat Shazam.

Aside from the main protagonist, the only other character who's been confirmed for the Spawn reboot is Detective Maximillian "Twitch" Williams, who's paired with Detective Sam Burke in the comics. For this movie, Twitch will have a different partner, and he will serve as the primary human character. With Todd McFarlane aiming for Spawn to be released sometime next year, that means production will likely begin in the coming months, which ideally means we'll find out who else will fill out this cast sooner rather than later.

After a long and storied road to get here, we are mere weeks away from the second Star Wars spinoff film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. The Ron Howard-helmed film promises to play like a greatest hits of Han Solo's notorious past, full of all the scum and villainy in the galaxy. We will be seeing younger versions of Star Wars favorites like Lando and Chewie, and I've wondered if we'll see Jabba and Boba Fett as well. However, now it appears that C-3PO may also make an appearance, and the source of this information is none other than Mark Hamill. When asked if C-3PO would ever break free of his subservience to the Skywalkers (A.I. in a galaxy far, far away hasn't had its Westworld moment yet), Mark Hamill said the following:

Ha-ha-ha-ha! [Anthony] Daniels was so happy, 'cause he's in every single Star Wars movie. Every single one. All the Prequels, he's in Rogue One, he's in Solo... Whoops! I hope that's not, erm... But anyway, he's in Every. Single. Star Wars movie. That's not such a reveal -- all Star Wars fans expect him to be in every movie.

Mark Hamill is truly the Tom Holland of the Star Wars universe, or Tom Holland is the Mark Hamill of the MCU. If we take Mark Hamill's comments on The Washington Post's Cape Up With Jonathan Capehart podcast at face value, it sounds like Anthony Daniels and C-3PO will be making it a perfect 10 for 10 on appearances in live-action Star Wars films when Solo hits theaters. Now it is important to note that rather than having accidentally let something slip, Mark Hamill may just be messing with us. The Jedi Master has a long and proud history of dolling out fake spoilers and generally trolling fans (and Disney) with his statements on the franchise.

However, as Mark Hamill says, Anthony Daniels' C-3PO has been in every Star Wars film to this point. This means there's an expectation from sone that he will show up, so perhaps this isn't that big of a spoiler. As to how C-3PO shows up and whether or not we need him to is another matter. The spinoff films to this point are basically adjacent to the main saga story, so it makes narrative sense that there would be some crossover of certain characters in Rogue One and Solo. This new movie is interesting because while it makes sense to see a lot of familiar faces, I'm not sure how C-3PO will fit in given where he is at this point in the story.

Presumably C-3PO is still the property of Bail Organa at this point and is hanging out on Alderaan, but Han Solo's story is still unknown, so maybe part of the character's criminal enterprises will take him to the former planet/current space dust, home of Princess Leia. I could see this working and just getting a quick glimpse of the droid, I just hope this doesn't result in Han Solo and Leia serendipitously passing by one another. As long as the cameo doesn't feel forced within the story, it will be good to see C-3PO again, who, although he still appears, definitely has had less to do in Star Wars movies of late.

We don't have too much longer to wait to see if this is true. Solo: A Star Wars Story is poised for a big opening weekend when it blasts into theaters on May 25.

Rami Malek's Bohemian Rhapsody Teeth Really Helped His Performance

Queen's Freddie Mercury was a frontman unlike any other, and thus, the biopic about the late singer, Bohemian Rhapsody, required a truly larger than life performance to match. That performance was found in the form of actor Rami Malek, who embodied Freddie Mercury studying his movements and stage presence, and even wearing false teeth to look like him. It turns out that the fake teeth really helped his performance too, as Rami Malek explained:

They started out being pretty difficult to deal with. We tried out all different sizes and when they first went in I felt very insecure, but immediately I compensated. Physically, I started to sit with more posture and elegance and I thought, 'Oh, he is so elegant!' You see him covering up his lips and his teeth all the time, and I could never quite get the hang of it. But as soon as those teeth went in, it was done. It was little things like that that were very informative for me.

From the outside looking in, you would think that acting would be much more difficult when one of your primary tools, your mouth, has a set of fake teeth in that change how you speak and feel, making you uncomfortable. And at first it sounds like that's how it was for Rami Malek, who told The Wrap that the teeth made him feel insecure, not entirely unlike Freddie Mercury himself, who would frequently cover his teeth.

But after getting over that initial awkwardness and embarrassment, Rami Malek found that having the teeth in actually helped his performance, as he sat up a little straighter and had more confidence. That confidence and as he describes it "elegance" in turn likely helped him feel what it was like to be Freddie Mercury, thus helping the actor to become the singer onscreen.

You saw something similar happen in the film too, when Freddie first introduced himself to Roger Taylor and Brian May. They comment on his teeth, which seems to hurt Freddie's feelings before he finds his confidence to stand a little taller, explaining that they make his mouth bigger and thus give him greater range before giving an impromptu audition that gets him the spot in the band.

The filmmakers actually tried different sizes of fake teeth for the film, going all the way up to the size of Freddie's real teeth. Those proved too big for Rami Malek's body and they opted to go with something that was a little more proportional, while still capturing Freddie Mercury's look.

You can't argue with the results either. While Bohemian Rhapsody on the whole has received fairly mixed critical reviews, that Rami Malek delivered a great performance as Freddie Mercury is generally agreed upon. While critics were split, audiences really took to Bohemian Rhapsody, propelling it like a tiger defying the laws of gravity to become the most successful musical biopic ever in North America.

It is just further testament to the enduring popularity of Queen's music among people of all ages, as well as the enthusiasm for Rami Malek's performance as the guy with the weird teeth who was called "Bucky" as a kid and went on to leave an indelible mark in rock music history.
