Austin Powers Actor Verne Troyer Is Dead At 49

Verne Troyer, best known as Dr. Evil's beloved sidekick Mini-Me, passed away earlier today. He was just forty-nine-years-old, though he'd been suffering from a combination of health problems and battles with addiction over the past several years of his life.

Details about what exactly happened are still emerging. Earlier this month, he was allegedly rushed to the hospital and treated for alcohol poisoning in what may have been a drunken suicide attempt. Sources close to TMZ are saying the actor remained in the hospital on life support since that earlier incident, but none of that has been confirmed by the family or authorities.

Those close to Troyer did, however, publish a very touching letter on his Facebook account. You can read it in its entirety below...

Most actors spend their entire lives looking for one role that really connects with audiences. After a series of stunt jobs and small acting roles, Verne Troyer found his role of a lifetime in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. In the film, he plays a miniature clone of super villain Dr. Evil, and fans took to it immediately. He quickly became perhaps the best loved part of the utterly ridiculous cinematic universe. He later appeared in the less well-received sequel and in between additional acting jobs, made numerous television appearances as himself.

Troyer was born with achondroplasia dwarfism, which limited his height to two feet, eight inches. He was initially raised in an Amish community, but his parents left not long after he was born. By all accounts, he was treated the same as his siblings and worked on the family farm in Michigan. At the age of twenty-five, he snagged his first acting role. He later picked up small parts in Men In Black, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas and My Giant, among others. At thirty, he was cast in the Austin Powers sequel, and the rest is history.

Our thoughts go out to Verne Troyer's entire family, as well as all of those who were touched by his life. He was reportedly a funny man with a big heart in real life too. He will be missed.

Looks Like World War Z 2 Might Not Happen

Despite its troubled production, 2013s World War Z managed to be a commercial success for Paramount Pictures. Its $540 million worldwide haul made it the highest grossing zombie movie of all time, and shortly after its release, Paramount gave the green light to a sequel. But in the years since, World War Z 2 has been hit with numerous setbacks, and today brings word that its hit its biggest one yet, as the studio has pulled the plug on the project.

This latest update comes from The Playlist, which reported that Paramount Pictures decided to shut down World War Z 2 last night following several months of pre-production. Supposedly the sequels budget was part of the problem, as director David Fincher and his team were planning to make World War Z 2 for less than World War Zs budget of $190 million, the amount before the extensive reshoots occurred. However, Colliders own sources state that World War Z 2s budget was actually going to be more than its predecessors original budget, and that Fincher refused to budge on the amount. So there are conflicting claims regarding money, and its also unclear how long these budget issues had been brewing.

In early 2017, Paramount announced that World War Z 2 wouldnt come out until 2018 or 2019 at the latest. A few months later, David Fincher officially signed on to direct, but his work on the Netflix series Mindhunter resulted in the fall 2018 filming start date being pushed back to this upcoming summer. Until last night, the plan was for principal photography to stretch across five countries, including spending six months in Atlanta, Georgia. Now all of that has been scrapped, with other issues that reportedly came into play including how long had passed since World War Z came out and how the sequel couldnt be released in China since the country bans zombie-related content.

Now the big question is whether World War Z 2 is dead for good or if, like the classic zombie, it will rise back to life in the future. If Colliders report is accurate, David Fincher is now off the project, although apparently star Brad Pitt is still attached. Perhaps Paramount might revive World War Z 2 if it finds a new director that can deliver a unique follow-up within the budget that the studio prefers, but for now, its back in development hell.

2018 was a mixed year for Paramount financially. Both A Quiet Place and Mission: Impossible - Fallout exceeded expectations with their respective hauls, but on the flip side, Bumblebee and Annihilation, both of which received positive critical reception, underperformed at the box office. So it does make sense if Paramounts leadership was concerned about World War Z 2s budget and decided to put it on ice and focus on other high-profile projects (Star Trek 4 not being one of them). Last month, the studio gave the green light to Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8, which will be filmed back-to-back and see Christopher McQuarrie sitting in the directors chair again.

This one might not go so well for the Avengers. Joe and Anthony Russo's upcoming Avengers: Infinity War is being touted as the beginning of a "culmination" of the 22-film MCU (or the opening stages of it, anyway). From what we are being told, everything that comes after both Avengers: Infinity War and the still untitled Avengers 4 will be totally different from what has come before, so all bets are off as to what can happen. Which means, when a character ominously states that "the end is near," we're starting to believe that this is very bad news for a few key members of the core Avengers team. Watch this reel of Avengers: Infinity War footage, which will get you pumped for the impending blockbuster:

As will likely be the case from now until the movie's release on April 27, the reel above is largely familiar scenes (to those who have scoured every inch of available Avengers: Infinity War footage) with one new shot mixed in. Here, it's this screengrab from the MovieAccessTrailers reel of some wayward Avengers coming back ON the grid, having departed the services of our nation -- officially -- at the conclusion of Captain America: Civil War. But here, Cap (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Vision (Paul Bettany) appear to be back in the official offices of a government agency, perhaps to be briefed on some Thanos-related chaos.

There's a rumor going around that a new trailer -- a fuller trailer -- will arrive soon... perhaps as early as this week. It makes me wonder, though, if we need to watch it. The movie will be here soon, and any new footage is only going to give away some of Avengers: Infinity War's finest surprises. We know we're going. You probably know that YOU are going.
