What DC's Next Superman Should Have, According To Nicolas Cage

What DC's Next Superman Should Have, According To Nicolas Cage

Movie fans were thrown for a serious loop this week, when it was reported that Henry Cavill was out as Superman. It was surprising news, and whether or not this is a negotiation ploy by Cavill's agents, everyone is talking about what actor could play a new version of Superman. In that case, why not ask someone who almost played the character himself? Back in the day, Nicholas Cage was almost Superman, and the actor has shared his opinion that whatever the next Superman project ends up being, it should focus on the character's isolation from humanity.

There's certainly a character there that has aspects that have not yet been seen before. All the feelings of alienness. How am I going to fit into society? Maybe if I become a hero, everyone will love me, even though I'm a freak. All that stuff wasn't really tapped into with the character. He's quite vulnerable. I don't know who should do it, but best of luck to them.

In the late nineties, Nicholas Cage was attached to play the Man of Steel in Superman Lives, which was to be directed by Tim Burton. The project never made it to fruition, but it still gained cult status on the internet for what could have been. It even inspired a documentary called The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, which dived into the story behind the lifespan of the project. Some photos of Cage in the red and blue costume exist online, and while the actor's days of pursuing the role are long behind him, he's still a massive fan of the character.

While doing press for his new movie Mandy, Nicholas Cage was asked by Indiewire what his thoughts were on who should be the next Superman. Cage took himself out of the running for the job, and while he names no specific actor, he feels there is still lots of potential because certain aspects of the character haven't been seen onscreen before. For instance, there hasn't been a movie that dives into Superman's feelings as a literal alien in society. Because as much as Superman genuinely wants to do good, he also wants to be accepted.

Some of the DCEU movies touched on this part of Superman, but that was ultimately weighed down by angst. Nicolas Cage shared that he was also a fan of Henry Cavill's performance, specifically the anger he brought to the character.

There's still a lot that we don't know about Superman's fate in the DCEU and whether the role will be recast or Supergirl will be taking his place. Either way, we'll be paying close attention, so stick with CinemaBlend, and we'll keep you updated on new information as soon as it becomes available.

The Awesome Way Emily Blunt Connected To Her Quiet Place Character

By  at April 11, 2023  , , ,  No comments
The Awesome Way Emily Blunt Connected To Her Quiet Place Character

At its core, acting requires people to play pretend for a living. Having said that, some roles are more intimate and personal than others. That's something that CinemaBlend recently had a chance to talk about with Emily Blunt during an interview about her work on A Quiet Place, and the actress revealed that her role as the mother in the movie is one of her most personal pieces of work yet because of her own status as a mother. Addressing her connection to the character, Blunt told us:

I just understood this mother so much. It's a very personal film for me. It's a very intimate film, much more so than any other character I've played because often you're sort of required to play somebody who's rather dissimilar from you. So that's a stretch, in its own right. When I did Girl on the Train or Sicario... how those girls live is completely different from how I live. This mother is somebody who I admire so much. I relate to her so much. I'm someone who sort of worries unnecessarily about her children anyway, as most parents do. This is like the magnified version of what my experience would be as a mother in this environment. So, it was moving and kind of gut-wrenching and at times the bright line between me and the character would become a little blurry. It's just such an intimate experience for me going through this.

Emily Blunt has played a wide variety of roles over the course of her career. From playing the lonely and alcoholic Rachel Watson in The Girl on the Train to the tactical and no-nonsense Kate Macer in Sicario, the Edge of Tomorrow actress has shown a natural ability to blend into unique environments. However, per her comments to CinemaBlend, A Quiet Place was far more personal and intimate for her because she was able to channel her own fears and anxieties as a mother and apply them to this heightened horror scenario. Of course, Blunt has played a mother before, but a big difference between a film like Looper and A Quiet Place is that she became a real mother herself in 2014 (and then again in 2016), so she now has a well of authenticity to draw from in her performance.

The authenticity of A Quiet Place arguably seems even more pronounced when we consider the fact that Emily Blunt was allowed to work alongside her husband, John Krasinski (who also directed the project) by playing the wife to his husband. In a film largely devoid of dialogue to help forge connections between actors, it seems relatively easy to assume that a natural romantic connection between the leads helped Krasinski and Blunt convey their on-screen romance as well. The result? A story as profoundly personal as it is genuinely terrifying.

John Krasinski's A Quiet Place will hit theaters this weekend on April 6. As for the early reception that the film has received, make sure to check out our full review of the movie, as well as our reaction roundup to see what audiences already have to say about it!

This Fake Aquaman 2 Trailer Is Hiding A Funny DC Gag

This Fake Aquaman 2 Trailer Is Hiding A Funny DC Gag

If you were thinking, "wow, it's way to early to be getting any sort of new information about Aquaman 2," then you'd be right. The movie isn't scheduled for release until 2022, and nothing is really happening with it yet, but that didn't stop the Warner Bros. YouTube page from dropping something this morning that it claimed was a trailer for the forth coming sequel. Needless to say, it was not.

Rather than being a promotion for a project coming in several years, it's actually a promo for one coming in just a few days. Shazam! is DC's next major release and the movie hits theaters at the end of the week. "The Kid Shall Reign" actually has a nice ring to it.

While Aquaman wasn't exactly the most dark and serious of the recent DC films, this little joke promo does show how the universe is shifting into an apparently more fun and light-hearted tone. Aquaman was one of the less serious members of the Justice League, but compared to Shazam, Aquaman has all the angst of your average Batman.

Of course, one area where Shazam! would like to be able to be compared to Aquaman for sure is in the realm of box office receipts. Aquaman became the highest grossing global hit for the DC universe so far, which, to be sure, was something of a surprise for a character that has largely been viewed as one of the Justice League's punchlines up until now. Shazam! isn't expected to do quite that well, but then, Aquaman wasn't either. The fact is that, because of the wider audience that Shazam! is likely to attract, it's very possible that the movie could do incredibly well by selling tickets to kids who might not have been allowed to go see something like Aquaman.

Shazam! is also doing much better with critics than Aquman did, which might help bring in a segment of the audience that avoided the king of the ocean because they heard the movie wasn't necessarily all that great.

Having said that, box office projections for the film have actually been shrinking slightly. The film was looking to do something around $50 million domestically on opening weekend but that number has now slid back into the $45 million range. Although, if international audiences pick up the baton for this one it could still become a massive hit even if it doesn't overwhelm the North American audience. That's ultimately what happened with Aquaman, while that movie did a quite impressive $334 million domestically, it was the over $800 million that was brought in overseas that made the movie the phenomenon that it was.

We still have a few years to wait before we see a trailer for Aquaman 2 but our next dive into the DC universe movies will be here much sooner when Shazam! arrives this week.
