The Masters Of The Universe Reboot Has Found New Directors...Again
Sony has had one hell of a time getting a rebooted He-Man and the Masters of the Universe movie off the ground. The project has had a revolving door of writers and directors, with notable names like Jon M. Chu, McG, and David S. Goyer having once been attached. Goyer is the one to have most recently left the project and Sony has finally found a replacement in the form of Aaron and Adam Nee. The duo is better known for helming smaller indie films, but now they have the POOOWEEEEEERRRR!
To say that making a He-Man movie is challenging might be too simplistic. Screenwriters such as Justin Marks, Evan Daugherty, Mike Finch and Alex Litvak, Richard Wenk, Jeff Wadlow, and Christopher Yost have all written different drafts of the project. Additionally, the project has never held a director for a long period of time, with Jon M. Chu, Harald Zwart, Chris McKay, Mike Cahill, McG, and most recently, David S. Goyer all having been tapped to direct at one point or another. Now Sony is looking to the Nee Brothers to bring this thing to theaters, and you might be asking yourself "Uh, who are the Nee Brothers?"
The Nee Brothers' most recent directorial credit includes the 2015 crime movie Band of Robbers, which was based on Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. They are primarily more experienced at handling smaller budget indie flicks, so the Masters of the Universe movie would be a major career advancement for the two.
According to Variety, a prior engagement forced David S. Goyer to step down as the director but he is still attached as an executive producer and is "extremely involved" in the development of the film, an insider said. The latest draft of the script was written by Goyer. Additionally, Sony has slated the movie for December 18, 2019, so they'll have to get rolling with this pretty soon if they want to make that release date. If that's the case, then more details about the movie will likely surface soon.
Sony is pretty gung-ho about getting He-Man in theaters, and while I remain a bit skeptical about it, the studio has earned some benefit of the doubt. Sony had a solid year of hits in 2017, releasing films like Spider-Man: Homecoming, Baby Driver, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the latter of which was a massive hit for them. All they need to do to make He-Man a huge success is hire Dwayne Johnson to voice Orco.
