Denzel Washington Had An Emotional Reaction To Black Panther
Over the course of the last four decades, Denzel Washington has appeared in some of Hollywood's most emotionally wrenching projects. That said, despite his experience, it sounds like films can still get under his skin and cause him to shed a tear. In fact, The Equalizer 2 star recently opened up and admitted that he cried when he saw Black Panther. The actor explained:
Black Panther, I shed a tear. I was sitting in there - I ran into Chad and Ryan before the movie started, it was their premiere, or the screening in New York, and just talking to them and they went into the movie - and the 40 years I've been in this game came back to me.
So, it seems that Denzel Washington really enjoyed the experience of Black Panther. Upon seeing Ryan Coogler and Chadwick Boseman at a screening of the film in New York, he felt the weight of his career upon him as he looked at two younger artists who represent a new generation in the industry.
Of course, it was not just a matter of Denzel Washington's history in the movie business that came back to him. He also felt something powerful because of what a movie like Black Panther means for the future of Hollywood, and how it relates to older black actors like him and Academy Award winner Sydney Poitier. The actor continued in his interview with Richie Driss and explained:
I said man, look at these young boys man, and I actually just started, I was whew. You know, Sidney, to now? And I'm in the gap -- and me and many others - are in the gap, but it was like, man. I felt like the third leg of the relay race. Like, here, go. Now, I ran behind them - I'm still running. But I was like, man, they gone. They're gone.
Now we're left to wonder what that future will look like. Maybe Denzel Washington will join Chadwick Boseman and Ryan Coogler in a future Black Panther movie, or maybe he will sit on the sidelines with the rest of us and watch the whole thing unfold. No matter what, we will see what the future holds for Black Panther next year when Avengers 4 ends Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on May 3, 2019!
